My first thanks are to Morris Altman. He is a long-time friend,
a wise and insightful editor, and a scholar who has encouraged
my behavioral economic research. He was editor of the Journal of SocioEconomics when my article “Stemming the Tide of Obesity” was published. He was editor at the Review of Behavioral Economics when my article
“Economic Decision Making: How Our Mind Works” was accepted for
publication. And as editor of a forthcoming book, Behavioral Economics
with Smart People, he invited me to write a chapter, and that led me to
write “Smart Persons and Human Development,” which in revised form
became chapter 4 in this book.
